Celebrating 21 Years of Recovery from Substance Misuse
Mid and East Lothian Drugs (MELD) are celebrating twenty one years of providing support within Midlothian and East Lothian. As part of our celebrations, we are inviting our local partners, stakeholders, practitioners and clients to come along to our 21st Birthday event to find out more about the range of services that MELD and partner servicers offer. It will also be an opportunity to meet our staff team. This event is taking place at The McSence Conference Centre, Mayfield, Dalkeith on Wednesday 14th January from 1pm until 4 pm.
MELD was established in 1994 in response to concerns raised by parents about the gap in services for those individuals within the community affected by substance misuse. Initially MELD employed two staff members to provide one to one support for adults experiencing substance misuse issues.
During our twenty one years, MELD has evolved into an agency with increased in capacity to provide a range of services to individuals’ who wish to recover from their substance misuse. Approximately 300 new clients are referred into our Core Service each year and throughout the organisation we now have more than a dozen highly experienced and skilled workers.
It is testament to the dedicated personnel within the MELD Staff Team and Management Committee that the organisation has produced so many positive outcomes for clients who have engaged in our recovery focussed services. The professional approach and creative vision of everyone involved in and at MELD has resulted in the organisation having an exemplary reputation amongst its peers and client group.
MELD continues to strive to address the needs of those affected by substance misuse in partnership with local and national, third and statutory sector agencies. In addition to providing recovery based services for clients we also offer support to family and friends who are affected by a loved one’s substance misuse. MELD also provides a needle exchange service, both at our offices in Dalkeith and on outreach basis in Musselburgh and Gorebridge in partnership with the NHS Harm Reduction Team.
Individuals wishing to address their substance misuse can engage in services by attending any of the four Gateway to Recovery Clinics located across the Lothians. Clients are offered a brief initial assessment and will then be referred to the most appropriate service that meets their needs. Meld, after all, also means; to combine with something else. We work closely with other agencies to provide a recovery based, person centred service, tailored to suit the individual.
MELD also facilitates a range of group based recovery opportunities to clients such as weekly SMART Recovery Groups offered from the MELD office and at additional sites in the local community along with many short term groups and courses. An increased number of staff members are now also trained to provide Auricular (ear) Acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention.
The MELD Management Committee are always keen to recruit new members to the Committee. If you can dedicate a few hours per month, have skills in finance, community involvement, health, social work or social networking and have a non-judgemental approach to the client group, you may be interested to learn more about joining our organisation.
